This project was a part of NC State display of Design Blok, with the theme of "Courage". Below is the attached paragraph explaining the piece.
No one knows you better than you do — but others can often see characteristics you overlook.
Your perspective is shaped by your unique experiences, yet it’s also influenced by the way you perceive those around you. To explore the vast differences in how we see ourselves versus how others see us, I asked 16 individuals to choose a color they felt best represented another person (perception on the left) and a color they felt described themselves (identity on the right).
The responses about others were often scattered— but through discussion, a shared consensus emerged. Many participants were taken back by the colors others associated with them, while some found that their self-perception aligned closely with how they were seen.
It takes courage to take a seat and think through our own perceptions of others, and rethink our own core identities. We need to trust ourselves and lean on others. While we are the only ones who can fully understand our personal experiences, others are the only ones who can see our idiosyncrasies. This exhibit invites you to think about the projections we place on others and ourselves— often without full understanding — and to remain open to thoughtful feedback from those who care for us. They just may notice parts of our everyday selves that we fail to see.
